Week 5, Back Out

The fifth song is called Back Out. YouTube link for iPhone

I’m pretty pleased with how this one came together. This song, like last week’s, was written in the drop-high-D tuning. It’s a really simple song. One guitar part, recorded once with my Audix dynamic mic through the custom iPhone adapter (same method for the bass track), and once with a new addition to my iPhone arsenal, the Blue Mikey.

Mikey was developed by Blue, a high-quality mic company, for recording to the iPod. It’s not officially compatible with the iPhone, but it’s worked just fine for me and some of the other folks out there working on iPhone recording. Mikey plugs into the iPhone connector, rather than the headphone jack, where it gets the power to make two tiny condenser mics work. All of the vocal tracks and the second guitar take on Back Out were recorded using the Mikey.

I’m happy with how everything ended up sounding, but it’s really a sensitive/touchy mic and I’m thinking there’s a bit of a learning curve on how to get the most out of it without too much noise. There are three gain settings, with the lowest advertised to handle loud live music. I’ve read that some have had mixed results using Mikey for that application, but it’s a relatively new product and there’s not a whole lot of user feedback that I’ve been able to find yet. For what it’s worth, I took a minute to test it out across the room from my drum kit and it seemed to be able to handle it without noticeable clipping. With 47 songs left there will be ample time to give Mikey a good workout.

For the drums I used the same four-mic setup as last week’s song with a slight shift of the snare mic. Drums and mixdown were in Reaper as usual. The other tracks were recorded on the iPhone using FourTrack. Extra thanks to the great folks at Sonoma Wire Works, the developer of FourTrack and other great iPhone and non-iPhone audio software. They were nice enough to mention me on their website and Facebook page. I really appreciate it. I’m digging how the iPhone has become the fertile ground for all of these creative new apps. It’s been really cool to be able to have access to the software developers and see how quickly things are evolving.

As always, I welcome your comments and questions. When I have a little more time I’d like to expand the links portion of this site, so if you have a favorite music or recording blog, site, magazine, or whatever, let me know.

I think this is my favorite one so far.

Thanks John. Week 3 was acoustic, and with the week deadline to write and record there’s enough of a time crunch that I can see more acoustic songs coming just to make deadline. I’m thinking next week’s song may be…but really, I have no idea what direction the songs will go from week to week. I’m a pretty big slow-core fan, so I count bands like Idaho, Red House Painters, Low and Codeine are among my influences. So, yeah, I’m sure that will come through as the project rolls on. Either way, thanks for listening.

So I may have missed it, but are you intentionally recording all this stuff using the iPhone and now Mikey? I’m just curious if that’s part of the experiment per se or just a matter of that’s what you have readily available.

Cory,

Can I come in and cut the drum track to this song?

I mean, no disrespect to your drum skills. Just thought it would be fun to cut a track together.

Dale: Absolutely. I’ll give you a call. I mean, they are your drums after all! And really, I would like to bring some guest musicians in to the mix as part of this.

Sayf: Yeah, sort of. I didn’t make a rule that says I have to record using the iPhone, but I don’t think that this project would’ve come together had it not been for it. I guess the idea is to not waste time (that I don’t have) with too much setup, or song revisions…which is more or less in the spirit of good old low-fi indie rock. It’s just a phone instead of a boom box. That said, I’ll probably keep putting multiple mics on the drums and use my high-fi junk because frankly I’m obsessed about drum sound. You should try it, it’s fun.

This is very ambitious and cool project Corey! I saw your post in the Riffworld forums and had to check it out. I havn’t tried 4 track yet (don’t have an iPhone and my iPod touch is first gen) but you might be interested in trying to use Riffworks to bring in guest musicians. I’ve always been happy and suprised by the additions to collaborations I’ve started there.

Just stumbled across this site from Sonoma’s mention and am mighty impressed. Way to go. As an iPhone / 4 Track user I’ll watch this with interest. I’ve seen stuff about the Mikey before but haven’t been persuaded to get one, yet, but might order that breakout cable you found. I’ve been looking for a good one for ages. Would love to use a decent mic for a change (been making do with Griffin’s mic and headphone adaptor. Not brilliant.)
